Blue Tang - quick as a flash!
The Regal Tang is bright blue fish from the tropical reefs of the Western Atlantic Ocean. Curiously the young Tangs start out a bright yellow in colour, the adult
fish retains some of the yellow colour in the tail. Another point of interest is the Regal Tangs ability to change colour to reflect its mood changes.
Our little Regal Tang can be quite shy of noise and often takes to the refuge of the reef to hide. He is 7 years old.
Regal Tang - so very blue!
The Purple Tang is related to the Regal Tang but is a deep purple in colour.
Both the Tangs are armed with a sharp barb set forwards into the tail fin which can be raised and flicked at other fish when it is under threat.
Our Tangs although different species still like to swim together and can often be seen darting at speed in and out of the lower part of the reef.
Clownfish are all good freinds
The Clownfish will almost always be seen swimming together in the top right part of the Aquarium. In the wild these fish are famous for their ability to hide in the poisonous tentacles of anemone without being harmed.
As they are not good swimmers they never stray far from the protection of the anemone. They are originally from the warm clear waters of the Pacific Ocean.
There are some fine and interesting fish in the Aquarium, some are quite shy and will wait for still moments to appear. The Aquarium has proved a popular distraction for visiting families. In the right column are some interesting facts about some of the fish that live with us at the Dental Surgery.

The Aquarium is a tropical salt water design decorated with live reef rocks carefully stacked to provide caves for the fish to swim in. The total capacity of the Aquarium
is some 350litres of water that's enough to make around 1400 cups of tea!
It is a difficult balancing act to get the water to the correct state to enable all of the tanks life to flourish. The cupboard base unit houses the necessary filtration units
to extract to waste products.
Coloured rocks?
The green and blue colour effects on the rocks are produced by various types of algae that grow upon them. This is indicative of a healthy Aquarium.
The Corals are alive and interestingly eat tiny particles of regular fish food, these are captured with miniature tentacles. They may look pretty but Corals can use force to take over new territory by shooting tiny poison darts into the adjoining plants. This weapon also provides good defence against hungry fish.
Brown Mushroom
These clustered plants are just one of the many types of sea plants that are called mushrooms.
The Mushrooms usually live in shallow water  to allow sun light to promote growth, they close themselves up at night rather like Daisies or Buttercups.
It reproduces itself by dividing, the first visible sign is the appearance of another hole coming from the centre of the plant.
